Murder and Terrorism Charges Against Late MP Ssegirinya Dropped.

Former Kawempe North MP, the late Muhammed Ssegirinya who died early this year.

The government has officially dropped murder and terrorism charges against the late Kawempe North MP, Muhammad Ssegirinya, following his death on January 8th, 2024. The charges, which stemmed from the 2021 “Bijambiya murders” in Greater Masaka, were withdrawn as the state cannot prosecute a deceased individual. The development was announced before the High Court’s International Crimes Division, where Justice Alice Komuhangi Kaukha acknowledged Ssegirinya’s passing and extended condolences to the nation.

However, the court directed the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to amend the indictment against Makindye West MP, Allan Ssewanyana, and four others—Jackson Kanyike, John Mugerwa, Bull Wamala, and Mike Sserwadda—who remain on trial for terrorism, murder, and attempted murder.

The charges relate to a series of machete killings in Greater Masaka that left over 20 people dead and many others injured in 2021. The case, now without Ssegirinya, has been pushed to next year for further proceedings.
